The Pannett Park Restoration Project

Thanks to the generosity of the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery Fund a comprehensive programme of restoration and refurbishment work is taking place at Pannnett Park between January 2009 and April 2010. A programme of funded events, training, marketing and arts activities will extend until at least March 2012.

Following an exacting two stage application process Pannett Park was awarded £1.4 million from the Heritage Lottery and Big Lottery Fund’s “Parks for People” programme in December 2009. The application was submitted by a partnership of The Friends of Pannett Park, Whitby Town Council and Scarborough Borough Council. Scarborough Borough Council have contributed £280,000 to the project in match funding.

The Pannett Park Restoration Project is not just about the physical refurbishment of the park. In order to meet the requirements of the Parks for People Programme the project must meet the following outcomes;

• A wider cross section of the community visit and use the Park
• The heritage value of the Park is conserved and improved
• The number of volunteers involved is increased
• knowledge and skills are improved through training
• Management and Maintenance improves for the long term.

A programme of preliminary tree management work was carried out in the Park during January and February 2009. Following a competitive tendering process John Hellens Ltd of Washington, Tyne and Wear were appointed to carry out the main restoration contract. The main contract runs from April until November 2009. This will be followed by planting of trees and shrubs throughout the Park during Autumn 2009 and Winter 2010.
